Diagnosticity of Individual Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
We tested whether the unequal-variance signal-detection (UVSD) and dual-process signaldetection (DPSD) models of recognition memory mimic the behavior of each other as applied to individual data. Replicating previous results, there was no mimicry for an analysis that fit each individual, summed the goodness-of-fit values over individuals, and compared the two sums (i.e., a single model selection). However, when the models were compared separately for each individual (i.e., multiple model selections), mimicry was substantial. To quantify diagnosticity of the individual data, we used mimicry to calculate the probability of making a model selection error for each individual. For non-diagnostic data (high model selection error), the results were compatible with equal-variance signal-detection theory. Although neither model is justified in this situation, a forced choice between the UVSD and DPSD models favored the DPSD model for being less flexible. For diagnostic data (low model selection error), the UVSD model was selected more often.

متن کامل[Determinants of preferences among tasks with diagnosis of his/her own ability: individual and sex differences in self-assessment motivation and self-enhancement motivation].
There are two different views on gathering information about self. According to "self-assessment" view, individuals choose tasks that are diagnostic about themselves, regardless of self-esteem implications. On the other hand, according to "self-enhancement" view, individuals choose tasks that are diagnostic only when they have positive self-esteem implications. Present research tested these pre...
متن کاملAttitudes toward Groups and Behavioral Intentions toward individual Group Members: The Impact of Nondiagnostic Information
The current research examined the impact that nondiagnostic individuating information has on the consistency between subjects’ attitudes toward a group and their behavioral intentions toward individual group members. Consistent with predictions, nondiagnostic individuating information reduced the consistency between subjects’ intentions to vote for a political candidate and their attitudes towa...
متن کاملRevisiting Tversky's diagnosticity principle
Similarity is a fundamental concept in cognition. In 1977, Amos Tversky published a highly influential feature-based model of how people judge the similarity between objects. The model highlights the context-dependence of similarity judgments, and challenged geometric models of similarity. One of the context-dependent effects Tversky describes is the diagnosticity principle. The diagnosticity p...
متن کاملExploring intention to reuse recommendation agents from accessibility-diagnosticity perspective: the moderating effect of domain knowledge
Recommendation agents help users reduce information overload and improve decision quality. Yet, many online shoppers have negative reaction or have no motivation to use recommendation agents, since they have no idea of whether users can achieve their shopping goals with less effort. We think information is fundamental to using recommendation agents. This study develops a research framework from...
